INTRODUCING

Melatonin Mastery

Melatonin is widely used by patients and clinicians alike, yet its clinical role is often misunderstood.Melatonin Mastery is a focused clinical training designed to help healthcare professionals think clearly about when melatonin is appropriate and how to use it thoughtfully across common sleep-wake presentations.

In this clinical training, you’ll learn:

  • When melatonin is clinically appropriate in adult patients

  • Dosing considerations by indication, age, and patient sensitivity

  • Clinical applications, including:
    • Insomnia (adults + perimenopause)
    • Circadian rhythm disorders
    • ADHD & neurodivergent patients
    • General sleep support & stress-related sleep disruption
  • How formulation, timing, and dose influence clinical response
  • How to counsel patients on realistic expectations and limitations
  • How melatonin fits alongside CBT-I, light therapy, and behavioral or lifestyle interventions

What's Covered

Dosing, Clarified

Melatonin functions both as an endogenous hormone and an over-the-counter supplement, which contributes to widespread confusion around dosing and timing.

This section clarifies the distinction between physiologic vs. pharmacologic dosing, reviews what doses are supported by evidence, and explains how to individualize timing based on circadian biology and the patient’s clinical presentation.

Special Populations, Special Protocols

Melatonin has roles beyond jet lag, but its use varies significantly by context.

You’ll review evidence-informed applications in:

  • Perimenopause and midlife sleep disruption

  • ADHD and neurodivergent patients

  • Delayed sleep–wake phase disorder

  • Psychiatric and medically complex patients

With attention to safety considerations and common pitfalls,

Formulation and Quality Considerations

Not all melatonin products are equivalent. Differences in formulation, release profile, and manufacturing quality meaningfully affect clinical outcomes.

This section covers how to:

  • Use immediate-release and extended-release formulations

  • Evaluate supplement quality and labeling

  • Counsel patients on realistic expectations around brands and delivery methods

Additional Training Materials

Included reference resources to support clinical application:

  • Melatonin dosing reference guide
  • Supplement brand guide
  • Considerations for medication-related melatonin suppression
  • Phase Response Curve (PRC) overview and clinical relevance
  • Additional downloadable clinical tools

This Training Is a Good Fit If

  • You work with adult patients in outpatient or ambulatory settings

  • You are a physician, NP, PA, or health professional

  • Your patients are already using melatonin and you want clearer guidance on how to counsel them

  • You take an integrative or whole-person approach and recognize sleep as foundational to health

  • You value evidence-informed clinical education and patient empowerment around supplements

This training assumes basic clinical familiarity with sleep and outpatient care.

About the Instructor

Nishi Bhopal MD

ABPN Board Certified in Psychiatry & Sleep Medicine

I am a board-certified psychiatrist and sleep medicine physician with over a decade of experience in outpatient clinical practice. After completing my sleep medicine fellowship at Harvard, I quickly realized that much of what clinicians need to manage sleep problems effectively falls outside traditional training.

Over the years, I’ve worked with patients across the sleep spectrum — from chronic insomnia to hypersomnia and circadian rhythm disorders — and have focused on practical, evidence-informed approaches that can be applied in real-world clinical settings.

Sleep is foundational to both mental and physical health. Yet access to sleep specialists remains limited, and many patients rely on general clinicians for guidance — particularly around widely used interventions like melatonin.

Melatonin Mastery was created to give clinicians clear, high-yield guidance on the appropriate use of melatonin, so they can counsel patients with greater confidence and integrate it thoughtfully into comprehensive sleep care.
